Democrat Sherrod Brown Received Close to $4.9 Million from Wealthy Donors

Former Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who plans to compete for a Senate seat against Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) in 2026, has long cast himself as a blue-collar populist. However, an analysis of donor records by Breitbart News reveals that throughout his political career, he has received nearly $4.9 million from individuals connected to Wall Street, large banks, investment firms, and wealthy benefactors.

Brown has accused his rival of accepting funds from “Wall Street” and “billionaires,” asserting that “Worker > Wall Street.” He remarked that “Wall Street doesn’t believe in the dignity of work” and pointed out the significant influence Wall Street holds over politics. He emphasized his commitment to “making life easier for all Ohioans,” contrasting his goals with what he described as his opponents’ focus on serving the interests of billionaires. He insists that Ohioans deserve representation that fights for them rather than for “billionaires and special interests.”

The donor list highlighted by Breitbart includes notable liberal figures such as J.B. Pritzker, Tom Steyer, George Soros, Alex Soros, Steven Spielberg, and members of the Murdoch and Lucas families.

It also encompasses affluent contributors from the financial, investment, and corporate sectors like Henry Laufer, Marcia Laufer, Seth Klarman, Katherine Rayner, Stewart Resnick, Jonathan Tisch, Donald Sussman, and Penny Pritzker.

Hunter Lovell, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, commented to Breitbart News: “Sherrod Brown is hypocritically attacking Wall Street while quietly profiting from the very entities he claims to oppose. Ohio voters are weary of politicians who make empty promises on the campaign trail while engaging in dealings that contradict their rhetoric.”

These revelations around campaign contributions put additional pressure on Brown’s populist image. Breitbart previously noted that Brown himself pointed out the financial entanglements of many politicians with large corporations, noting he’s received close to $400,000 from lobbyists and corporate PACs linked to major health insurance providers like Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Centene, Aetna, and United Health.

Brown received substantial funds from lobbyists connected to organizations like UnitedHealth, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna, among others.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee launched an advertisement earlier this year criticizing Brown’s lengthy tenure in politics, calling attention to his first run in 1974 and accusing him of endorsing policies from the Biden-Harris administration that burden the middle class.

Brown’s stance on immigration adds another layer of complexity to his attempts at presenting a moderate profile. He supported the repeal of President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration regarding border wall construction, claiming that there was no genuine emergency and that Trump was a central figure in both impeachment trials. In January, he urged the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants due to the lack of safe return options, stating that they are crucial to Ohio’s communities economically.

Moreover, a Signal Ohio report indicated that Brown has called for a complete reform of ICE. He insisted on the dismissal of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, arguing that ICE operations undermine community safety. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who defeated Brown in 2024 despite significant Democrat campaign support, reacted by stating that voters are “tired of liberal Democrats who exploit American workers in favor of cheap labor,” adding that TPS should always be temporary and “it’s time to go home.”
