California Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu has introduced a bill that would create a nationwide ban on the possession and use of glue traps to capture rodents.
The move was announced by Liu via a press release on Wednesday, in which he denounced trapping as one of the cruelest methods of getting rid of rodents and said it poses a public health risk. . Glue traps are boards coated with adhesive that are used to trap and kill pests.
Lieu's bill, dubbed the No Glue Trap Act, is supported by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the Humane Society Legislative Fund, and the Humane Society of the United States.

“Animals may peel off their skin in an attempt to escape the adhesive, and some may even gnaw on their own limbs,” Liu said in a statement. “Animals that cannot escape die from blood loss, suffocation and dehydration.”
Mr Liu said traps were already banned in England, Iceland, Ireland and New Zealand, as well as more than 100 airports across the country. The CDC urges Americans not to use glue traps because trapped rodents can spread disease.
Liu said the bill was inspired by the city of West Hollywood, California, which became the first city in the country to ban glue traps. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is a co-sponsor of Lieu's bill.
“Glue traps are cruel and inhumane and can pose a health risk to humans and pets,” Liu said in a statement.

PETA Executive Vice Chair Tracy Lyman said Lieu showed compassion and leadership by introducing this bill.
