Suozzi Suggests Socialists Start Their Own Party

Rep. Tom Suozzi has proposed that American democratic socialists, like New York City mayoral candidates Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, should leave the Democratic Party and create their own. He expressed this viewpoint during an appearance on CBS New York’s “Points” with Marcia Kramer.

Suozzi, who represents parts of Queens and Long Island, stated, “Zohran Mamdani and other democratic socialists don’t want that in my party, so they should make their own.” He added that a victory for Mamdani could be detrimental for the Democrats, suggesting that the mayoral race won’t end well for them.

He also urged Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democrat minority leader, to not support Mamdani’s campaign, saying it would have negative implications for Democrats nationwide.

In the Democratic primary this past June, Suozzi backed Andrew Cuomo, but Mamdani’s candidacy has raised concerns among some lawmakers about the potential fallout in suburban swing districts.

Republicans are already utilizing Mamdani as a talking point in future elections, particularly eyeing the Nassau County District Attorney’s race and the upcoming mid-term elections.

Mamdani’s platform includes raising taxes on the wealthy to fund initiatives like free public transport and childcare, opposing certain Israeli policies, and advocating for decriminalization of various acts. Interestingly, it seems he has backtracked on some of his earlier stances, such as calls to reduce police funding.

In an interview, Suozzi stated, “Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system,” suggesting that socialism has historically failed. His spokesperson later reaffirmed that he stands by his comments, indicating that Suozzi believes Mamdani and his supporters should form their own party instead of trying to reshape the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) functions as a political organization but is not an official party and typically comprises members who are registered Democrats.
