It’s hard to believe someone would say this openly, but here we are. California Democratic Senator Scott Wiener seems to have gone a bit too far in a recent statement.
On Monday, he called conservative commentator Charlie Kirk a “slutty paranoid,” while also asserting that Kirk didn’t deserve to die. “Charlie Kirk didn’t deserve to be dead, and yet he was a hateful bigot harming many by normalizing dehumanization. Yes, such topics should be discussed on college campuses,” Wiener stated.

Yes, it’s good to have discussions on university campuses. But dehumanizing people—and persuading others to do so—is horrifying.

It’s worth remembering that Wiener has been a significant advocate for controversial policies in California related to child welfare and LGBTQ rights. Since becoming a state senator, he has backed legislation focusing on children’s gender identity, calling for specialized training for educators, and allowing minors to receive care without parental consent.
When someone you disagree with passes away, it might be wise to keep certain thoughts to yourself. Timeless wisdom suggests that we shouldn’t speak ill of the dead; politicians, in particular, seem to struggle with this concept, frequently voicing controversial opinions that might appeal to their supporters.
It would be better to refrain from commenting on the deceased, acknowledging that violence—political or otherwise—should have no place in society. Yet, it seems Wiener took the opportunity to gain favor with his online followers, who, perhaps, have a warped view of reality.
Some comments surrounding death can be quite insensitive. The way Wiener approached this situation feels particularly off-putting.
