Democrat Delia Ramirez’s Remarks at Latino Conference Draw Attention

During a recent gathering of foreign-born Latinos in Mexico, Representative Delia Ramirez from Illinois expressed, “I am a Guatemalan I was proud of before I became an American.” This statement has led to considerable discussion, especially among constituents who feel her allegiance may lie more with Guatemala than with them.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly reminded Americans of President Theodore Roosevelt’s stance against foreign loyalty, reinforcing the idea that the U.S. expects its citizens to be devoted to their nation.

Part of DHS’s responsibility includes revoking citizenship from individuals who acquired it through fraudulent means. Additionally, the agency oversees the naturalization process, which requires individuals to formally declare their loyalty to the United States.

Interestingly, Ramirez did not have to take a loyalty oath herself, given her unique background—her parents were born in the U.S. after immigrating illegally. Reports have highlighted her family struggles, including her connection to DACA recipients and the challenges faced by working immigrants, particularly during her mother’s journey across the Rio Grande.

These experiences have clearly influenced her approach to political issues, emphasizing the needs of American citizens over immigrants, even as she holds a Congressional seat and takes the loyalty oath.

Her diverse background does not hinder her alignment with law and order principles. In May, Ramirez confronted DHS Chief Christine Noem, questioning her commitment to upholding the U.S. Constitution, to which Noem responded affirmatively.

Ramirez expressed her frustration: “We do not live in dictatorships or monarchies,” she said, asserting the importance of democracy and constitutional rights. She critiqued the current administration’s approach to immigration, holding it accountable for actions that she believes undermine the foundational values of the country. Ramirez called for Noem’s resignation, reflecting her deep concerns over the direction of immigration policy under DHS.

Representing a district in the Chicago area with a significant Hispanic population—including some illegal immigrants—Ramirez is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, advocating for a balanced approach that considers both American citizens’ needs and immigrant rights.
