Democratic donors call on Biden to step down

More than a week after President Biden’s poor debate performance, calls continue for him to step aside and give someone else a chance to run.

Even after his interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Friday, the president has yet to convince all Democrats, including lawmakers and donors, that he is the right man to take on former President Trump and serve another four years in office.

Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings stepped up his calls for Biden to resign after the interview.

“Biden is unfortunately in denial about his mental health,” Hastings said. A statement to ABC News. “He needs to step aside and allow strong Democratic leadership to defeat Trump.”

Former PayPal CEO Bill Harris told the outlet that Biden “looked old” in the interview and believed it could turn off voters who are skeptical of Biden’s abilities.

He donated $620,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in 2020 but believes it’s “inevitable” that Biden will drop out of the race this time around.

Prior to the ABC interview, leading Democratic financier Whitney Tilson told ABC News that one standout interview wouldn’t change her view that it’s “highly unlikely” that Biden will beat Trump in November.

“Even the wealthiest people have limited money,” Tilson told the outlet, adding that he would hold back on donations to support candidates “who are running for office.”

“I’m done,” he posted after the interview, calling it “an embarrassing public display of irreversible aging.”

“I have deep respect for Joe Biden and the life he has dedicated to serving our country,” he said, adding, “At this critical time, in this pivotal election, it is right and honorable for President Biden to step down.”

Prior to the interview, Damon Lindelof, co-creator of “Lost” and a prominent Democratic supporter, called on fellow Democratic donors to stop giving to the party until Biden leaves office.

He said Biden’s debate performance was “groundbreaking” and that it was time for someone new.

Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Roy O. Disney, co-founder of the Walt Disney Co., said Thursday that she plans to stop donating to Democrats unless Biden withdraws.

“This is reality, and this is no disrespect,” she said in the interview. “Mr. Biden is a good man and has served this country well, but the stakes are too high.”
