Democratic Insider Criticizes Hakeem Jeffries for Lacking Strong Leadership

The integration of Democrats seems to be faltering since Donald Trump’s second election win. This week, a former adviser to Nancy Pelosi pointed out that House Democratic leader Hakem Jeffries is lacking the necessary qualities to challenge the MAGA movement effectively.

On the Politico podcast Playbook Deep Dive, political strategist Ashley Etienne commented that New York Democrats “have not displayed enough leadership strength, and his organizational abilities are insufficient, especially at a time when strong and innovative guidance is urgently needed.” The host of the show is Rachel Bade, Politico’s Washington Director.

Etienne has considerable experience within the Democratic establishment, having served as the communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris and previously for Nancy Pelosi. She was also a special assistant to Barack Obama.

Bade touched on the podcast, noting:

We discussed the strategies Democratic leaders need to adopt to regain voter trust. This includes enhancing grassroots efforts instead of relying on attention-grabbing antics that divert focus. She criticized the Democrats for failing to conduct a thorough analysis of what went wrong in the 2024 elections.

The podcast revealed some insider perspectives.

Bade also remarked:

Etienne believes that Jeffries hasn’t adequately connected the anti-Trump narrative to the Democratic framework. She noted that he has struggled to coordinate with outside groups and officials nationwide, and has failed to leverage moderates effectively, suggesting the party needs to focus on the center.

“There’s a saying that if there’s no change, it’s just a talking point in the headline,” Etienne remarked. “That’s ineffective, and I think that’s where we currently stand.”

For years, Democrats have often spoken with a unified voice in Washington, while Republicans frequently struggle to maintain consistency. This has been attributed in part to the rifts caused by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s tenure.

Bade noted that one of the “most surprising aspects of our discussion” was Etienne’s observation that Jeffries’ team lacks access to the seasoned advice of Pelosi’s former advisors.

Etienne mentioned that it suggested Jeffries’ team should reach out for guidance from Pelosi or her past associates. She recently approached Jeffries’ staff to offer her assistance but was told, “The members aren’t interested in Pelosi.”

“I’ve heard from leadership staff that there’s a desire on Capitol Hill to distance themselves from the Pelosi era. Frankly, I think that’s a misguided approach,” she stated.
