Local Democratic Committees Rally Support for Gov. Kathy Hochul

ALBANY — According to a source, the state Democratic committee is aiming to position local party leaders in support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

State Commission Chairman Jay Jacobs reached out to the chairs of the 62 counties this week, asking them to sign a letter backing Lt. Col. Antonio Delgado, who is facing significant challenges.

This request comes as state Democrats urge county commissioners to submit funding requests for the upcoming year.

“He’s looking to push them into providing support for the head of the state board’s chair,” an informed source mentioned regarding Jacobs’ actions.

“Some haven’t signed yet, while others have. There are those who are resistant and clearly won’t support Hochul,” the source elaborated.

Furthermore, some chairs who have signed are indicating a lack of commitment to endorsing the governor in the primary, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction with her leadership, according to the insider.

Reports suggest that Jacobs and party officials began contacting chairs on Monday night, shortly after news surfaced of his intention to announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 2026 election.

Jacobs confirmed that 49 out of 61 county leaders, including all chairs in New York City, have endorsed Hochul in the letter.

He dismissed suggestions that the appeal was linked to potential funding from the party.

In an interview, he expressed discomfort at the notion that supporting Hochul was aimed at galvanizing a united front behind an unpopular governor.

“The 2025 election is crucial in Orange County. While I respect both the governor and Delgado, my focus is firmly on local campaigns, not the statewide primary next year,” he remarked.

“We appreciate the involvement of elected Democrats or candidates willing to engage in grassroots efforts across the state to present a compelling vision for our party,” he added.

Caitlyn Ogden, chair of the Otsego County Democratic Committee, expressed concerns regarding early consolidation around President Biden in anticipation of the 2024 elections.

“New York has a unique chance to learn from the 2024 experience, particularly regarding the pitfalls of quickly rallying behind candidates. It’s an opportunity for discussions and for voters to make their preferences known,” Ogden stated.

Hochul’s campaign has yet to respond to requests for comments.
