Democratic North Carolina Rep. Don Davis holds onto seat in swing district

North Carolina Democratic Rep. Don Davis fended off a challenge from Republican Laurie Buckhout and held onto a key seat for Democrats seeking control of the chamber.

According to the Associated Press, Davis won the 1st Congressional District with 49.5% of the vote to Buckhout's 47.9%, with 99% of the votes counted.

The district has long been a Democratic stronghold, but the state's redistricting last year made the seat more competitive.

He has distanced himself from Biden's controversial comments calling Trump supporters “trash” in the final weeks before the election.

“We must lower the temperature on all fronts and refuse to call individuals and communities ‘trash.’ Our campaign will continue to divide families in eastern North Carolina and the American people. The focus is on bringing people together.” he tweeted.

This race was not just a conflict between political parties, but also a conflict between military branches. Mr. Davis is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and Mr. Buckhout served in the U.S. Army.

She retired after 26 years as an Army colonel and later founded a consulting group specializing in electronic warfare and cyberspace operations, which she sold in 2019. Her platform focused on the economy, strengthening U.S. border security and protecting Second Amendment rights.

Throughout his campaign, Davis has pitched himself as a political moderate, unafraid to take the party too far to the left.
