Rep. Ro Khanna Advocates for a “New Democrat” Movement
Representative Ro Khanna from California addressed the need for a rejuvenation of the Democratic Party during the TOMorrow Summit in Washington, D.C. on July 25, 2025. He emphasized that voters in 2025 require a fresh perspective.
In his speech to young progressives, Khanna questioned how governments can effectively accomplish significant tasks amid corruption. He mentioned that tackling the influence of major financial interests in politics is crucial for achieving a progressive future, particularly for the working class. His remarks included references to the ongoing discussions surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s files, which have gained traction in Washington.
Furthermore, Khanna stressed the urgency of transforming the party to better represent human rights and the working class. He stated, “The old guards need to go. The old ways are not working.” The need for a rebirth within the party was a central theme of his address.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to deliver a virtual statement at the summit, joined by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who exuded confidence about regaining control of the House of Representatives. “There’s no doubt we will win the election together,” she asserted.
Pelosi highlighted the importance of preparation, suggesting that the coming year would be critical for mobilization and funding, which are essential components for successful campaigning.
Younger Democratic leaders, such as Arizona’s Rep. Yassamine Ansari and Illinois legislative candidate Kat Abugazare, participated in the summit’s panel discussions.
Khanna’s speech reflects the Democratic Party’s ongoing struggle to adapt in light of significant shifts in voter demographics following the 2024 election. There are varying perspectives within the party, with some advocating for a gentler approach while aligning with Khanna’s more populist sentiments.
In closing, Khanna asserted the need for the party to stand firm on immigration rights and emphasized his vision for a Democratic Party that truly represents the future and the working class. “I am a Democrat who can lead us to victory,” he concluded, asserting the importance of a diverse and inclusive party identity.
