Sen. Elissa Slotkin Critiques Democratic Approach to Immigration

In a recent interview, Sen. Elissa Slotkin expressed her concerns regarding the Democratic Party, suggesting they are hesitant to confront the immigrant community due to fear of backlash.

“Republicans tend to leverage anti-immigrant sentiment strategically, while Democrats seem apprehensive to upset either immigrant groups or their leftist supporters,” she noted. This hesitation becomes even more evident during election primaries.

Slotkin pointed out that many Americans recognize the significance of immigration in bolstering the economy, but they prefer that immigrants enter through legitimate and vetted processes.

“When I bring up that perspective, a lot of my Democratic colleagues often react with unease,” she said.

She highlighted that advocacy organizations frequently fail to represent the views of many voters. For instance, during the last election, Latino voters exhibited a notable shift, contrasting with claims made by some groups regarding representation for the immigrant community in Washington.

Slotkin remarked that she believes the Democrats have lost their “alpha energy,” which she describes as a crucial emotional component in politics.

“It’s about addressing people’s struggles with a thoughtful, yet strong approach,” she elaborated.

This “alpha energy” embodies qualities like boldness and willingness to take risks without being overly anxious about potential consequences.

In response to President Trump’s address to Congress back in March, Slotkin criticized his foreign policy and advocated for a more sensible approach to governmental changes.

“We all desire to see an end to the war in Ukraine, yet true strength combines our military and economic power with moral clarity,” she stated post-speech.

“Reflecting on the Cold War, I’m thankful we had leaders like Reagan in the 1980s; I genuinely think Trump would not have succeeded in that era,” she added.
