Cheryl graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and served in the military for nine years, earning the rank of lieutenant.

Sherrill was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, flipping the seat held by Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen for more than 20 years.
After retiring from the military, Sherrill earned a law degree from Georgetown University and practiced law for about 10 years before entering politics.
