Democratic socialism is gaining ground in urban areas of America. Be mindful of the warning.

Democratic socialism seems to be making significant strides across the country. In New York City, all three candidates backed by Mayor Zoran Mamdani won their primaries. Additionally, a recent election in Washington, D.C., has put another self-identified “democratic socialist” in the public eye.

What does this growing trend signify for major cities like our nation’s capital and New York? One way to grasp its implications is to look at the actions and beliefs of democratic socialists in other contexts.

For instance, Katie Wilson, the mayor of Seattle and a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, has taken stances such as advocating for police defunding and targeting private property owners through local campaigns.

Mamdani’s rise is shaking up the Democratic Party, revealing fractures within its progressive wing.

Seattle carries a legacy of radical politics; Kshama Sawant, a self-styled socialist eyeing a Congressional seat, has a history of engaging in divisive politics—from the disruptive Occupy movement to the chaotic Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in 2020.

The newly elected mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani, is pushing for a considerable expansion of the civil service workforce, free public transport, state-run grocery stores, and greater intervention in real estate, among other initiatives.

In organizing efforts, Mamdani’s administration seems to be more than just about community service; they appear focused on affirming his agenda and cultivating a political base, which apparently includes volunteers parading around in red “socialist” bracelets, according to reports from the Free Press.

Democratic socialists see themselves as successors to a group of progressive thinkers who believed a kind of utopian “Great Society” could be achieved through government intervention.

While the modern heirs of this ideology might glimpse the failures of their predecessors, they often miss why those failures happened. The earlier progressives created cumbersome red tape and bureaucratic systems that hindered initiative, creativity, competition, and market-driven incentives.

Today’s democratic socialists tend to focus on the sluggish processes, low economic growth, and ineffectual bureaucracies, blaming wealth creators, innovators, and corporations instead of recognizing that flawed policy is often at the root of these problems.

The consistent remedy proposed by democratic socialists is the same: increasing government control, imposing higher taxes, and reducing individual freedoms and opportunities. This is part of why many businesses are relocating from states like California, New York, and Washington to areas such as Texas and Florida that offer more favorable conditions.

Now, another major American city stands on the verge of fully embracing democratic socialism. Regardless of political affiliations, it’s clear that Americans need leaders who champion the ideals of individual freedom, opportunity, strong familial structures, vibrant civil communities, a robust private sector, and limited government intervention.
