The Democratic Socialists of America took to social media to celebrate Vice President Kamala Harris’ pick of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
“Harris’ selection of Waltz as her running mate showed the world that DSA and our left alliance are a force to be reckoned with. Through collective action, DSA and the American left more broadly have made it clear that change is needed. DSA members have organized in workplaces and unions, and realigned the labor movement in support of Palestinian liberation,” the Democratic Socialists of America, the largest socialist group in the United States, posted on X on Tuesday.
The DSA also touted that it had pressured Democrats to ignore other candidates, including one with “direct ties to the Israel Defense Forces.” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was one of Harris’ top running mates and was reportedly an IDF volunteer in his youth.
The Democratic Socialists of America has long called for a ceasefire since Hamas began its attacks on Israel on October 7 last year, but the group has not condemned Hamas, instead arguing that the attacks are “a direct result of Israel’s apartheid regime.”

“The Uncommitted Movement, in which DSA members played a key role nationally and in several states, pressured the Democratic establishment to select a new candidate and to withdraw a running mate who had direct ties to the Israel Defense Forces and would have vehemently supported the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” DSA continued in the X thread.
The socialist group congratulated Harris on her selection of Walz, but stressed that its “demands remain unchanged” regarding the escalating war in Israel.

“Harris must call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and implement all arms embargoes on Israel,” the group wrote.

Walz is not a member of the DSA, but he has spoken favorably about socialism, including in a “White Guys Supporting Harris” campaign call last week that was roundly condemned by conservatives.
“We must never shy away from our progressive values,” the Minnesota Democrat said. “What is socialism to one person is neighborly love to another.”

After Harris announced Waltz, former President Donald Trump said he was “thrilled” by the choice, citing Waltz’s left-wing policies that he said American voters have rejected.
