CHICAGO, Illinois — Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein said Thursday that Democrats are “absolutely cheating and changing the rules to stay in power.”
Stein was responding to a line from former first lady Michelle Obama’s speech on Tuesday night: “We don’t cheat others to get ahead. We can’t bend the rules and always win.”
Obama’s comments were intended as a jab at former President Donald Trump, but Stein added:
Stop gaslighting. Now. @TheDemocrats They have hired spies and infiltrators to sue and obstruct us from voting in multiple states, and are even trying to withhold public funds that we were entitled to only months ago.
Democrats will absolutely cheat and change the rules to stay in power… https://t.co/1NWe52wzaO

Stein’s objections to Obama’s comments appear to come because she and other independent candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy, have been the targets of lawsuits by Democrats and Democratic-backed groups who want to keep as many independents off the ballot as possible.

Democrats are also challenging independent candidates’ voting locations. Cornel Westthe Green Party, Jill Steinand Claudia de la Cruz of the Socialism and Liberation Party.
Democrats also filed lawsuits in 2020 to change voting rules in many states to allow for widespread voting by mail, and in an internal party maneuver, removed President Joe Biden as the party’s nominee and replaced him with Vice President Kamala Harris after party insiders and donors deemed him a burden after the first presidential debate in June.
Harris has never won a primary election and in 2019 dropped out before the Iowa caucuses.
