Democrats Affected by Trump-Opposing Supporters Struggle to Acknowledge World Cup Achievement

Democrats Hesitant to Celebrate World Cup Success

It seems that Democrats are feeling pressured by their anti-Trump supporters to avoid acknowledging the achievements of this summer’s FIFA World Cup. An article from Politico highlighted that key figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro have not publicly praised the efforts of local officials and others who have helped make the tournament a success thus far. Similarly, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill have attended matches but have held back any expressions of excitement.

This is unfortunate, really, as the World Cup should be something that unites people, regardless of their political views.

However, one Democratic representative, Brendan Boyle from Pennsylvania, seems to get it. He acknowledged that most American sports fans are not viewing the World Cup through a political lens. “I will do everything I can to get the World Cup back here as soon as possible. It’s been a remarkable success,” Boyle remarked recently. He also expressed his hope to see the Tartan Army based in Philadelphia because their fans have won over many in the U.S. “Though, if I’m being honest, I also hope Ireland makes it,” he added.

Boyle conveyed that the World Cup represents a “great moment” that should remain free from political implications. He expressed his enthusiasm about the U.S. hosting the event, noting how positive the foreign fan response has been in terms of learning more about America and interacting with its citizens.

He made it clear that his comments are not intended to reflect on the Trump administration. While he acknowledged that some of Trump’s immigration policies may have deterred visitors, he attributed the event’s success to the efforts of local organizers.

It’s not just Democrats who are dragging their feet. The New York Times has consistently published disappointing articles, including one that was surprised to find European tourists fascinated by venues like Bass Pro Shops. Another article focused on scrutinizing social media posts of tourists enjoying American food.

Yet, the fans attending the games? They’re clearly enjoying the experience.
