Democratic Party leaders are still “actively” urging President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race, CNN host John King said Monday during CNN’s coverage of the Republican National Convention.
“My reports are that while public voices have quieted significantly, there is still a fairly active private movement urging President Biden to step aside and withdraw from the election,” King said. “Public voices have quieted because of the tragedy of Saturday’s assassination attempt. Also, Democrats believe they need a unified message while the Republicans are holding their convention.”
He added, “The president said in an interview with Lester Holt today that he has no plans to withdraw from the race. Democrats believe it would be counterproductive to publicly debate party leaders. However, I have heard that Democratic lawmakers are continuing to lobby the White House, the president’s closest advisers.”
King added, “They argue that we’ve passed the point of no return, and that President Biden will not only lose, but will lose in a way that will devastate the party.”
