Democrats Aim to Establish a New Think Tank to Move Beyond Woke and Identity Politics

Democrats Explore New Think Tank Initiative

Some members of the Democratic Party are contemplating the establishment of new think tanks aimed at promoting broader political perspectives, as reported by Politico. This proposal was put forward during a private gathering in April that included several prominent donors and party figures.

At this meeting, Adam Gentleson, who previously served as a top aide to former Senate majority leader Harry Reid and is associated with Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, introduced the concept of a think tank named Searchlight. The goal, as shared by anonymous sources, is to steer Democrats toward positions that resonate more with the general populace in anticipation of the 2028 presidential election.

Reportedly, Seth London, a consultant for key Democratic donors, is collaborating with Gentleson on this initiative. This effort, it seems, comes as Democrats seek strategies to reconnect with voters they lost during the 2024 election cycle. An informant noted that “voters aren’t strictly divided along the ideological lines that interest groups often impose,” suggesting that these new ideas could help reach a broader audience.

Furthermore, a Democratic donor adviser who supported Gentleson’s concept emphasized the need for a “moderate voice” that distances itself from “woke” and identity politics. They argued that a softer approach is essential, especially after the party’s disappointing performance in previous elections.

In the wake of Republican victories in the 2024 elections across the White House, Senate, and House, some party leaders have openly criticized their party’s strategy on significant issues. Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz mentioned in March that Democrats may have let the GOP “define issues,” particularly concerning immigration and diversity. Former Chief of Staff to President Obama, Rahm Emmanuel, has also characterized the current Democratic brand as “weak and woke.”

As of now, Gentleson has not responded to requests for comments regarding this initiative.
