Former Vice President Kamala Harris made an unexpected appearance at the Met Gala on Monday, a notable move since her public outings have been limited following her defeat to President Donald Trump last November.
The 2025 Gala’s theme, “Superfin: Black Style Tailoring,” celebrates black dandyism and highlights the role of clothing and style in shaping black identity within the Atlantic Diaspora.
As noted by Vogue, Black Dandyism is described as a cultural movement deeply rooted in fashion, history, resistance, and pride. This year’s hosts included prominent figures like Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colmandomingo, and $AP Rocky.
A Democratic social media account shared a photo of Harris, sparking mixed reactions. Critics questioned the appropriateness of such posts, with journalist Zaid Jilani asking why major Democratic accounts were promoting Harris’s attendance at a high-profile gala.
Atlantic staff writer Connor Friedersdorf commented humorously on the Democrats’ strategy, questioning the effectiveness of promoting an event for Manhattan elites to connect with working-class voters.
“Art has historically played a significant role in our culture and politics,” Harris said in a Vogue statement about the gala. “Artistic expression captures people’s feelings and experiences, shaping discussions about our current state and future direction.”
On one hand, attendees wondered why Harris, being one of the most recognizable black politicians after Barack Obama, was present at the Gala celebrating blackness.
