Democrats annoyed by Hakeem Jeffries' unexpected hold on Trump bill

Democrats expressed frustration with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who didn’t receive prior notice for a lengthy speech regarding President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” on Thursday. It seems Jeffries intended to address this but was given a heads-up to “prepare, book multiple flights, and be flexible,” which left him a bit irked when he had to rebook a flight close to July 4th.

One House Democrat remarked, “I’m glad I lifted my head,” possibly hinting at the chaotic environment.

Debate Kicks Off Over Trump’s Proposal

Jeffries took to the House floor for a marathon speech that lasted 8 hours and 44 minutes, starting before 4 AM and concluding around 1:30 PM. He shattered the previous record held by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who had spoken for 8 hours and 32 minutes.

During his address, Jeffries highlighted stories of individuals who risk losing Medicaid coverage due to Trump’s proposed budget, drawn from states led by Republican lawmakers.

Critique of Trump’s Budget

“It’s essential for Americans to understand… food assistance averages merely $6 per day,” Jeffries pointed out. Contrasting that, he noted how a federal contract with Elon Musk amounts to, as rumored, $8 million a day. If Republicans are genuinely concerned about eliminating waste and fraud, they should start there, he suggested.

Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which secured passage in the House on Thursday after Jeffries relinquished the floor, aims to permanently extend the reduced income tax brackets established by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
