Democrats are ‘pissed off’ at party leadership for pushing Biden out, CNN analyst says: ‘Save those mimosas’

Former South Carolina congressman and CNN analyst Bakari Sellers said Democratic voters are “outraged” by Biden’s decision to drop out of the election and criticized party leaders for pressuring him to halt his campaign.

Sellers, in an interview on “CNN Newsroom” on Sunday, said his phone is “ringing off the hook” from Democrats worried that Kamala Harris will be “taken off” the list of potential candidates after Biden announced she is the nominee. Ending reelection bid.

“My phone is flooded with emails from angry people, and the reason they’re angry is because they feel like the people at the top have pushed Joe Biden out,” he said.

“A friend of mine emailed me and said, ‘If they get rid of Joe Biden, what will Kamala Harris do?’ They will probably try to get rid of her too. There is a lot of fear out there and the ‘elders’ of leadership like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have done the damage. The sooner they come to the defence of Kamala Harris the better for all of us.”

He added: “And maybe we’ll save those celebratory mimosas for another day…”

Biden endorses Kamala after dropping out of 2024 presidential race

Biden’s resignation announcement came amid growing public calls among Democratic lawmakers for him to step down, after party leaders reportedly tried to convince the 81-year-old Biden that he could not defeat former President Trump in November’s general election.

ABC News reported that Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, told Biden in a “frank one-on-one conversation” last week that it would be best for him to “drop out of the race.”

According to reports, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California) said in a phone call with President Biden that polls show Biden cannot defeat former President Trump in the November presidential election, and that her continuing the election campaign could damage the Democrats’ chances of taking control of the House of Representatives in November.

Biden expressed his “full support and endorsement” of Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee. The president’s endorsement would discourage serious competition from other Democrats who might be considering the presidential nomination and pave the way for the vice president to succeed Biden as the party’s candidate.

Responding to the news, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said in a statement, “Joe Biden is not only a great president and a great legislative leader, he is also a truly incredible human being. Of course, his decision was not easy, but he has once again put our country, our party and our future first.”
