Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, recently suggested that “Trump Mad Syndrome” (TDS) is a genuine mental health issue, drawing this conclusion from his observations of Democratic behavior.
During a walk through the Capitol, Cruz remarked that Democrats have become erratic, driven to “crazy towns” by their animosity towards Donald Trump, as he shared with a Fox News Digital reporter.
Cruz referenced TDS while discussing what he sees as a self-sabotaging strategy from Democrats opposing the deportation of illegal criminals, focusing particularly on Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador.
A group of Democrats, including Maryland’s Senator Chris Van Hollen, recently traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Garcia’s return to the U.S. after he had been deported and incarcerated there.
Cruz pointed to a consistent trend he perceives in Democratic responses, stating, “If you look at State of the Union addresses, it seems like there’s not a single Democrat who can acknowledge anything positive.”
The senator paused to analyze what he termed Democrats’ “disability.” He questioned their support for violent, criminal immigrants, referencing a New Mexico judge arrested for housing members of the Tren de Aragua gang and destroying evidence by smashing a gang member’s cell phone that had horrific photos on it.
Cruz expressed disbelief, stating, “It’s a bizarre political choice that Democrats have made. They see themselves as the party of illegal immigrants and gang members.”
In a seemingly coordinated reaction to Cruz’s comments, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested later that same day while protesting at an ICE detention facility, alongside several Congressional members.
Documents released by the Trump administration and local law enforcement point to connections between Salvadorians and the MS-13 gang, with Garcia’s wife alleging years of abuse at his hands.
Following these allegations, Van Hollen and other Democrats shifted from supporting deportees based on character to advocating for a broad “justified procedure” for illegal immigrants facing deportation.
Recently, the Supreme Court backed a lower court’s order that allowed Garcia to return to the U.S. to participate in court proceedings before deportation.
The Trump administration agreed to remove administrative barriers to Garcia’s return, but Attorney General Pam Bondy indicated that if he wanted to return, that wouldn’t involve the U.S.
Aside from the legal complexities, Cruz argued that the Democrats’ immigration stance is driven more by their disdain for the president than by any strong political principles.
“We see Democrat senators traveling to El Salvador and investing their political capital into supporting more illegal immigration. Essentially, they’re inviting more criminals into our country,” he said, labeling such actions as irrational.
