Sen. Ron Johnson’s Stance on Government Shutdown and Obamacare
During a recent appearance on a show, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) expressed his belief that Democrats are leveraging the government shutdown to obscure the shortcomings of Obamacare.
When asked about the duration of the shutdown, which lasted nearly a month, Johnson remarked, “I’ll never understand what the Democrats think. They’re doing some pretty bizarre things.” He elaborated on his thoughts, suggesting that the situation is essentially a strategy to distract from the issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act.
“I want everyone to grasp that their main goal is to hide the failures of Obamacare,” he stated, adding that they are looking to maintain the enhanced subsidies.
Johnson described it as “obviously a cover-up for how they’ve allowed premiums to soar in the individual market due to design flaws and the enhanced subsidies implemented during COVID-19. It was intended to be a temporary measure that would eventually end.”
He further explained, “They recognized that once the subsidies lapsed, the public would see the significant failures of Obamacare. So, they contrived a narrative that would blame Republicans for the inflated costs associated with the program.”
Additionally, Johnson commented on the media landscape, saying, “There’s a lot of streaming media and traditional media that coexist with them, and I think that’s starting to fade a little bit.”
He reminisced about the situation before Obamacare, noting that around 12 million Americans were engaged in individual policies—often short-term ones—such as those who were in between jobs. He claimed that Obamacare disrupted this market by eliminating high-risk pools, short-term plans, and advanced catastrophic care options, forcing more people to fund pre-existing conditions without addressing the core issues. “The design was flawed, and that’s what contributed to rising insurance premiums,” he added.
Johnson continued by asserting that Democrats are trying to obscure their role in this predicament. “They don’t want the public to recognize the failures of the Affordable Care Act. They aim to mask all of that by throwing more money at it, but Republicans shouldn’t go along with this. I’m sure that’s not the intention, but we need to maintain our resolve. It’s essential for all Republicans to stand firm and withstand the misleading narratives from Democrats,” he said, advocating for the use of free market principles in their response.
