Democrats Split Over Israel Funding Amid Rising Progressive Influence

A significant divide is emerging within the Democratic Party regarding support for Israel, as reported from Capitol Hill. Progressive figures on the far left are advocating for anti-Israel policies, contributing to internal conflict among Democrats. Notably, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has been evasive when pressed about his views, while Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has drawn a line in the sand, labeling anti-Israel positions as unacceptable and even threatening to leave the party. Republicans are paying close attention to these developments as the midterm elections approach.

A recent incident involving moderate Representative Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey illustrates this tension. Two far-left House Democrats attempted to criticize him but ended up confusing him with another Jewish Democrat. In response, moderate New Jersey lawmakers highlighted their support for Ukraine to counter the backlash.

This conflict escalated when Gottheimer publicly condemned the growing presence of Democratic Socialists within the party, stating, “DSA is not the Democratic Party. They are socialists who want to take over the Democratic Party.” He emphasized the Democratic Party’s inclusive nature but firmly rejected anti-American rhetoric.

Facing Gottheimer’s criticisms, Representative Summer Lee from Pennsylvania responded by accusing him of contributing to the issue. Her mistake—mistaking Gottheimer for Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro—added a layer of irony to the exchange. Gottheimer promptly clarified, pointing out that they were indeed different individuals sharing a first name.

Adding to the chaos, Representative Ilhan Omar defended Lee, asserting that Shapiro had signed off on actions that Gottheimer opposed—which, to be fair, wasn’t entirely accurate as it confused the timeline of events.

As this conflict unfolded, Gottheimer argued that there was a discrepancy within the party regarding the condemnation of anti-Semitism. He suggested that while Democrats are quick to denounce anti-Semitism from conservative circles, they’re often silent when it comes from the left, calling it a blatant double standard in a New York Times op-ed.

Moreover, a recent vote exemplified the rift over Israel funding. Lee and Omar were part of a group of 103 Democrats who supported an amendment by Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, aiming to restrict U.S. funds designated for Israel. Gottheimer opposed this amendment, highlighting yet another point of contention within the party.

As these tensions continue to rise, many in the party are left navigating a rather complex landscape, balancing varying ideologies while trying to maintain unity heading into the elections.
