Democrats Face Criticism Over Government Shutdown
Arguments from Democrats regarding a potential government shutdown are starting to weaken, with even some previously supportive media and celebrities turning against them.
During a tense exchange on Tuesday, CNN’s Jake Tapper confronted Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) about the lack of SNAP benefits. He questioned whether the Democratic senators from New Mexico should push to reopen the government to prevent disruptions for those relying on SNAP.
Stansbury responded, asserting that “the administration is choosing to starve American children with funds already appropriated.” Tapper quickly clarified that he wasn’t endorsing their tactics.
She maintained that the government shutdown was “the White House’s choice.” Tapper countered, pointing out that the Senate Democrats also bear responsibility for not voting to reopen the government.
Stansbury dismissed Tapper’s claims, insisting that the allocated funds for contingency plans were being withheld by the White House. She mentioned that these funds would only cover two to three weeks’ worth of SNAP benefits, which doesn’t address the needs of families long-term.
She emphasized that people need assistance immediately, stating that “Saturday is when that money runs out.” Tapper responded, suggesting she should urge her congressman, a Democratic senator from New Mexico, to vote for a government reopening.
Additonally, Stansbury claimed she was indeed fighting to reopen the government.
