Sen. Chris Van Hollen Celebrates Return of Abrego Garcia to U.S.
Senator Chris Van Hollen has expressed his delight at the return of Gilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to the United States, emphasizing that the situation is “not about a man, it’s about constitutional rights.” He believes the Trump administration has downplayed the importance of the Supreme Court and said in an email statement that it seems they are finally becoming more compliant with due process rights.
Van Hollen was the first Democrat to visit Abrego Garcia after his deportation to a high-security prison in El Salvador earlier this year. Abrego Garcia, 29, now faces sealed federal charges in Tennessee regarding illegal activities related to transporting undocumented immigrants.
There’s a significant divide on opinions regarding Abrego Garcia’s innocence. While many Democrats defend him, insisting he was wrongfully deported, the administration points to substantial evidence linking him to the MS-13 gang. He reportedly has a history of facilitating illegal immigration between Texas and the interior of the U.S.
His wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sula, has claimed in court records that he has physically abused her multiple times, which complicates the narrative surrounding him.
Since Abrego Garcia’s deportation, Van Hollen has been vocal in his support for his return. When questioned about prior allegations of domestic violence against Abrego Garcia in May, the senator insisted that such matters should be settled in court. He has reiterated that “this is not about a man. It’s about his constitutional rights and all rights.”
Democrats have rallied around his case, considering it a significant cause. Maryland Democrat Rep. Glen Ivy also visited El Salvador to advocate for Abrego Garcia, citing a broader crisis embedded in the situation. He criticized the Trump administration for ignoring the Supreme Court and misleading the American public regarding the issues at hand.
Ivy mentioned that Abrego Garcia deserves a legitimate process in line with the Constitution. In a sharp contrast, Maryland’s only Republican representative, Andy Harris, criticized the situation and labeled it a misuse of taxpayer money.
