According to a recent report, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, is considering a presidential run for 2028 as the Democratic Party assesses its position following Donald Trump’s decisive win in 2024.
Ocasio-Cortez’s team is reportedly getting ready for a potential campaign for either the presidency or the U.S. Senate in 2028, coinciding with Chuck Schumer’s re-election bid. The news was shared by Axios on Friday.
While she hasn’t officially declared her intentions regarding the Senate or presidential run, it appears she’s been consulting with a former senior adviser familiar with Bernie Sanders’ political path. Recently, she joined Sanders on a nationwide tour titled “Battle Oligarchy,” which aimed to challenge policies from the Trump administration.
Attempts to reach Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comments on her potential 2028 run were unsuccessful.
Fox News Digital spoke with Shasti Conrad of the Democratic National Committee prior to the report about Ocasio-Cortez’s ambitions, where they discussed the need for a range of leaders in the party.
Conrad, who chairs the Democratic Party in Washington, emphasized that the party is in need of “hundreds of leaders” and mentioned figures like socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and former Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg. She expressed the importance of understanding how these leaders could make a difference in people’s lives.
Moreover, she noted the necessity for Democrats to stay vigilant regarding Trump’s activities, continuously holding Republicans accountable.
Meanwhile, Conrad commented on Kamala Harris’s recent book, which she says allowed the former vice president to “speak her truth” during the 2024 election cycle. The book reportedly reveals Harris feeling unsupported by the Biden team.
In an excerpt, Harris reflects on Biden’s decision to run for re-election at age 81, labeling it as “recklessness.” This has spurred some former White House officials to suggest that Harris is deflecting blame onto Biden rather than taking accountability for her own performance.
Current discussions among Democrats indicate a recognition of the challenges they face as they navigate the post-Trump landscape. Conrad mentioned that the landscape looks tricky for Democrats, with Harris potentially eyeing a future presidential run and other notable names also stepping into the conversation.
The report emerges as Democrats prepare for the future in the wake of Trump’s victory in November 2024.
