Criticism Over DHS Acquisition of Luxury Jets
Democrats are expressing discontent with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for acquiring two high-end private jets for the use of the secretary and other senior officials, particularly during the ongoing government shutdown.
Recently, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) finalized a contract with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation to obtain two G700 jets at a cost exceeding $170 million, as indicated by documents from government procurement sites.
The Coast Guard indicated that these jets would replace an older aircraft, which is about 20 years old and has faced various maintenance issues, according to a press release.
The USCG emphasized that the aircraft are deemed essential for official travel by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar, and the Coast Guard’s senior commanders.
Adm. Kevin Lunday, acting Coast Guard commander, mentioned in a statement that this investment underscores the urgent need to modernize Coast Guard operations in response to evolving maritime and national security challenges.
However, Democratic lawmakers are questioning how the luxury jets were funded, arguing the purchase contradicts the initial budget requests submitted to the Department.
In a letter to Noem, House Appropriations Committee members Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Lauren Underwood (D-Ill.) sought more details about this expenditure.
The lawmakers noted, “We have come to learn that the USCG entered into an exclusive agreement with Gulfstream for two new G700 jets, totaling $200 million funded by taxpayers.” They further suggested that since Noem has signed off on all contracts exceeding $100,000, she likely played a role in approving this one.
DeLauro and Underwood also criticized Noem’s track record, implying that her decisions often prioritize her needs over those of USCG personnel. They demanded clarity on why there was a shift in funding strategy and why Congress was not informed early on.
Earlier this year, the Coast Guard’s budget request included plans to purchase a long-range Gulfstream V jet for Noem’s personal travel, valued at approximately $50 million, which drew heavy criticism from the Democratic Party.
Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member, labeled the acquisition of multiple luxury jets for personal travel as “completely inappropriate.” He urged Congress to investigate the situation, stating that it’s “deeply troubling” to make such expenditures while many DHS employees are working without pay.
Thompson added that it feels hypocritical to argue the necessity of these purchases for safety while Coast Guard personnel are using outdated aircraft from the 1980s.
Similarly, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) voiced his disapproval, remarking, “As many Coast Guard members go unpaid, Secretary Kristi Noem is pursuing a billion-dollar jet.” He advised, “Cool the jet and fly commercially.”
A senior adviser countered these criticisms, suggesting that allegations were merely political maneuvers. Sean Plankey argued that the acquisition is essential for safety and operational readiness, stating that senior officials require secure travel options.
He further remarked that while some statements might draw attention online, they fail to address the serious reality of safeguarding citizens around the clock.
