Democrats criticized for Omar event after anti-Semitic attack in Boulder

Colorado Democrats have drawn criticism for organizing a fundraiser with Rep. Ilhan Omar, occurring just about an hour after an anti-Semitic terrorist attack that left 12 people injured, including Holocaust survivors.

The suspect, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabrie Soliman, is facing multiple state-level murder charges tied to federal hate crime accusations. Authorities have indicated that Soliman was in the U.S. illegally, having overstayed his visa and work permits.

Not long after the attack, a “private reception” with Omar took place in Denver. Numerous prominent Democrats were listed as event hosts, and ticket prices varied from $500 to $7,000.

“Colorado Democrats who raise funds for known anti-Semites ought to be deeply ashamed, especially when doing so coincides with the latest victims of anti-Semitic violence,” one critic remarked.

Another noted, “Last year’s House Democrats even isolated Israeli hostage families from the floor to avoid conflicts over the actions of radical members. This has to stop. Clear statements against extremists who endorse violence against Jewish communities are urgently needed.”

In the aftermath of the violence, Omar stated on social media, “Violence of any kind is unacceptable. We must denounce hatred and harm in all forms.”

Rep. Junie Joseph of D-Boulder, present at the event, is also facing scrutiny. She expressed her condolences to the victims of the Boulder attack and affirmed her denunciation of all forms of hatred, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

“Sunday was a painful day for our community. My heart goes out to all who were affected,” Joseph wrote in an email. She added that her attendance at the event was meant to introduce Omar to young Democrats, not to endorse specific policies.

Joseph emphasized, “Supporting a dialogue does not mean endorsing any specific stance. I believe in advocating for peace, dignity, and human rights for everyone, Israelis and Palestinians included. Navigating these times is challenging, and I am committed to listening and leading thoughtfully.”

Omar’s campaign has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the situation.
