House Democrats Reject Plaques at Capitol
House Democrats are refusing to display plaques at the Capitol, expressing their frustration after Mike Johnson protested and made paper replicas instead.
On Sunday evening, House Judicial Democrats shared a message:
They noted that Congress passed legislation on January 6th to honor the officers who safeguarded power transfers, along with members of Congress and Vice President Pence. Rather than recognizing those who protected him that day, Speaker Johnson has kept the plaques stored away.
Democrats like @Repraskin and @housedemocrats have decided to keep the replicas in view until the official plaques are installed where they rightfully belong.
A video shows Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, presenting a “replica” of the plaque that Congress voted to install by March 15, 2023.
“We honor the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of police officers,” he stated.
Raskin asserted, “Speaker Johnson consistently refuses to acknowledge this.”
“Working alongside Joe Morell, from the House Management Committee, and Jim McGovern, from the House Rules Committee,” he added.
Raskin emphasized, “There shouldn’t be anything controversial about this. It’s time to stop rewriting the history of January 6th.”
He referenced Republican remarks following the Capitol riots, mentioning comments from figures like Marco Rubio who described the chaos as “a third-world anti-American anarchy.” He also quoted Chip Roy expressing alarm over the violence, insisting there are consequences, and Mitch McConnell acknowledging Trump’s moral responsibility for inciting that day’s events.
