Democrats Embrace Socialism While Republicans Support Capitalism

Growing Support for Socialism Among Democrats

Recent polls indicate that rank-and-file Democrats are increasingly leaning towards socialism, showing a notable decline in favorable views of capitalism. This trend was highlighted with the Democratic primary victory of Zoran Mamdani in New York’s mayoral race.

His win has sparked concern among centrist Democrats, who fear that Mamdani’s influence may reshape the party’s national identity, pushing it further away from mainstream American values.

According to a Gallup poll, only 42% of Democrats now view capitalism positively, while 66% express favorable opinions about socialism. This marks a significant shift in attitudes over the past 15 years, where support for socialism has risen as confidence in capitalism declines.

A recent August poll, involving 1,094 U.S. adults, reveals that both younger and older Democrats are warming to socialist ideas. However, those under 50 are notably less likely to view capitalism positively, whereas opinions among older Democrats remain relatively unchanged.

Some Democratic leaders have voiced concerns that figures like Mamdani and others leaning toward socialism might need to form their own party. Representative Tom Suozzi, in an interview, pondered whether Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries should back Mamdani, given potential negative consequences for the party. Suozzi acknowledged the drawbacks of capitalism for Democrats but stated that “American socialism has failed.”

Mamdani has proposed initiatives, such as creating a city-operated grocery store, and has faced criticism for remarks made during a podcast in July 2020, particularly regarding police response to domestic violence calls.

Despite this shift towards socialism, other Democrats, including New York Mayor Eric Adams, continue to campaign independently. This is not an unprecedented trend for the party; in 2018, Gallup noted that for the first time, Democrats held a more favorable view of socialism than capitalism.

As observed, this shift demonstrates a notable disillusionment with capitalism, even amid economic growth under previous leadership.
