Democrats, including Jeffries and Newsom, urge Kristi Noem's impeachment over fatal ICE shooting

Calls for Impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary

As prominent Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom push for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following a deadly altercation during immigration enforcement, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has indicated that it could be on the table if Democrats regain the House in the 2026 midterms.

In an incident in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a 37-year-old woman named Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE officer after she refused to leave her vehicle and attempted to flee.

Noem stated at a press conference that Good had “weaponized her vehicle” and attempted to hit a law enforcement officer instead of following orders. She and other officials from the Trump administration claim that the officer involved acted in self-defense.

A ruling from the Minnesota Supreme Court in early 2024 established that vehicles used recklessly can be classified as dangerous weapons under state law. Minnesota Statute 609.02 includes any instrument likely to cause death or serious injury as a “dangerous weapon.”

Democrats have reacted strongly to Noem’s comments, calling for her resignation or for her to be removed from office.

Representative Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) announced on social media that she would be pursuing Articles of Impeachment against Noem.

“I’ve had enough,” Kelly expressed. “She has turned ICE into a rogue force, violating the Constitution, tearing families apart, and leaving death in her wake. From Chicago to Minneapolis, her recklessness cost lives, including Renee Nicole Good. This isn’t just dangerous—it’s impeachable. I’m fighting back.”

Jeffries has suggested that the idea of Congress impeaching the Homeland Security Secretary isn’t far-fetched.

“Yeah, we haven’t ruled anything in or anything out in terms of the proper way to bring about accountability,” Jeffries remarked in an interview.

In line with this sentiment, Newsom’s office tweeted that Noem should step down to prevent further fatalities, asserting that she needs to be held accountable.

“Kristi Noem should resign — before more Americans are killed. She needs to be held to account,” the tweet said.

Additionally, the governor’s office reminded citizens to protest peacefully, emphasizing a need to avoid escalation.

“Yet another attack and shooting by President Trump’s private police force on American soil. Disgusting,” it stated. “Remember, if you are going to protest — do so peacefully. Do not play into their games of escalation. They don’t care about you, only their agenda.”

Meanwhile, some believe impeachment may not be enough punishment for Noem. Recently, a video surfaced showing protesters chanting alarming slogans that indicated escalating frustrations.

“Kristi Noem will hang!” the crowd chanted.

Describing the incident, Good had blocked a roadway with her vehicle after following ICE officers. Her partner was filming and encouraged her as law enforcement approached, ordering her to exit the car. Good reversed slightly, then accelerated forward into the officers.

Footage from the incident captured the moment right before the vehicle contacted an officer, revealing tension in the air as gunshots rang out. The officer involved received treatment and was later released from the hospital.

In a separate post on social media, the Democratic Party attempted to frame the incident in a different light, which neglected to mention Good’s apparent defiance of law enforcement or her hazardous actions.

“Newly released footage reveals Renee Nicole Good’s last words,” read the caption.

A screenshot from the footage was included with unsettling text attributed to Good just before the tragic event.
