House Bill on Election Integrity Faces Opposition
A new bill aimed at protecting election integrity was passed in the House on Tuesday, but it has prompted strong resistance from Democrats once again.
This legislation looks to abolish a Washington, DC ordinance called the Local Referendum Amendment Act of 2022. Notably, 210 Republicans and only 56 Democrats supported the bill, which prohibits non-citizens from voting in American elections. In contrast, 148 Democrats voted against this measure, advocating for the continuation of voting rights for illegal foreign residents in DC.
One Texas Republican, August Pfluger, expressed his view that the idea of foreigners voting in the nation’s capital is quite embarrassing. He stated, “Only American citizens should be able to vote in US elections.” Pfluger pointed out that by voting against this bill, 148 Democrats effectively supported the transfer of political power away from citizen voters.
Speaker Mike Johnson echoed Pfluger’s sentiments, asserting that “foreign actors” should not have the same voting privileges as American citizens. He added that it’s clear the DC City Council desires representation for non-citizens and foreign actors in local elections, which he believes undermines core principles of the Republic.
Other Republicans, such as Rep. Brandon Gill from Texas and Sen. Mike Lee from Utah, have also condemned the DC ordinance as “embarrassing” and “unjustified.” Gill remarked that for years, Democrats labeled conservatives as conspiracy theorists for exposing their strategies to include illegal foreign voters. He claims that their current actions are hypocritical, as they now fight to allow illegal aliens to vote, challenging the concept of American citizenship.
Lee reinforced this sentiment, declaring, “It’s the embarrassment of the people that foreigners can vote in the American capital.”
