O’Rourke Discusses Democratic Strategy on CNN
On Sunday, during an appearance on CNN’s “union status,” former Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) emphasized that Democrats need to be “absolutely ruthless about taking power.”
Host Jake Tapper noted the upcoming special session of the Republican-led Texas Legislature and inquired about the options available to Democrats, who find themselves in the minority.
O’Rourke pointed out the unpopularity of former President Donald Trump’s policies. He stated, “Whether it’s a significant bill or cutting nearly two million Texans from Medicaid or transferring wealth to the richest 1%, these policies do not resonate with the voters. Trump is avoiding accountability. Yet, Texas has various ways to push back.”
He added that there is more that can be done, referencing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s actions in his state. O’Rourke suggested it’s time for Texas Democrats to respond similarly.
Tapper acknowledged O’Rourke’s support for Newsom, who has established an independent committee in California aimed at ensuring fairness in the electoral process.
O’Rourke reiterated the need for determination, stating, “We must be serious and absolutely ruthless about seizing power. This applies to places like Illinois or New York; we need to maximize our efforts. If we can secure these districts in Texas and succeed in the upcoming election, we are poised and ready.”
