Texas Democrats Escape to Illinois to Block Congressional District Map Votes
Democrats from Texas have taken a trip to Chicago, Illinois, in a bid to impede votes concerning the 2026 Congressional District Map.
In total, 51 Texas Democrats made their way to Illinois, aiming to block legislative actions by causing a lack of quorum at the Capitol, specifically targeting the proposed district map vote.
The Texas Legislature recently introduced a bill that redraws the Congressional districts, seemingly in favor of Republican candidates, incorporating five additional House seats, as reported by various news outlets.
Interestingly, Illinois Democrats have held the majority in the House since 2021.
One Texas Democrat, James Tarico, explained their decision to leave Texas, stating that they intended to disrupt the quorum and stop what he described as Trump’s attempt to seize power.
He emphasized the urgency of their actions with comments about the impending midterm elections.
During a press conference, several Texas Democrats joined Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to voice their criticisms against former President Donald Trump, alleging misconduct in Texas.
Rep. James Tarico, one of the lawmakers who made the trip, expressed his intention to thwart what he saw as a “power grab.” Meanwhile, Rep. Cheryl Cole voiced her commitment to preventing what she termed a “stolen” election by indicating her and her colleagues’ resolve to fight back.
A tweet from another source asserted that Texas Democrats chose to leave for Illinois to avoid endorsing their district’s plans by denying quorum in the state House.
Amid these developments, some lawmakers claimed that they cannot allow Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott to misappropriate power through these proposed district maps.
According to the 2024 US Census Bureau data, Texas has witnessed the fastest population growth in the nation.
In reaction, Attorney General Ken Paxton criticized the fleeing Democrats and suggested that they should be arrested for abandoning their responsibilities.
He described their actions as neglecting their duties and asserting that they should face severe consequences.
Furthermore, Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned that if these Democrats do not return by 3 PM on Monday, their seats would be considered vacant, allowing for the possibility of replacements to be appointed.
