Democrats Prepare for Retaliation Against Trump Allies

Democrats have been gathering strategies for months to counter individuals and companies linked to President Donald Trump’s agenda. They’re indicating that if they reclaim power, efforts like demergers and congressional investigations will play a significant role in their pushback against the current administration.

Recently, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York took to social media to spotlight some of these plans. He referred to Brendan Carr, claiming him to be a “corrupt political hack” and criticized his position at the FCC. Jeffries suggested that Carr and his organization would soon face a congressional investigation.

These comments came after Carr hinted that the administration might increase scrutiny on license renewals for media outlets spreading “fake news.” Interestingly, this tension over political affiliations is not unique to Carr but seems to be part of a larger strategy.

As the November midterm elections approach, Democrats see a crucial chance to distance themselves from the Republican Party’s leadership and more actively resist Trump’s administration. Should they control even one chamber of Congress, they believe they could move forward with various forms of retaliation.

Democrats, along with Senator Ruben Gallego, have expressed a strong desire to pressure corporations whose mergers occurred during Trump’s tenure. Gallego warned, “Once we’re in power, regardless of who the president is, we’re going to break up your company,” implying that investments made for these mergers could be wasted, leading to potential job losses for executives.

Noteworthy mergers during Trump’s presidency include Paramount’s substantial acquisition of Warner Bros. and Capital One’s purchase of Discover. Senator Chris Murphy echoed Gallego’s sentiments, asserting that if Democrats regain power, they would target and dismantle problematic information monopolies, like those held by Paramount.

Moreover, Susan Rice, a former senior official in both the Biden and Obama administrations, stirred discussion recently by asserting that companies opposing Trump would be held accountable once Democrats regain congressional control. She stated, “Whether it’s a law firm or media company, we need to play the long game, which is very harmful otherwise.”

Meanwhile, the potential use of subpoena power has also been mentioned by Democrats. Representative Pete Aguilar suggested that using such power could help compel testimony from individuals close to Trump, setting a precedent for future congressional oversight.

Targeting the private sector is also on the agenda. Last year, Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas pushed to subpoena Elon Musk regarding his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, which spurred similar efforts in the Senate by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Democrats have been relatively tight-lipped when approached for comment regarding their plans to implement these strategies, leaving a sense of anticipation as the midterms approach.
