Democrats Secure Victory in Special Election

Republicans are grappling with yet another election setback as Democrat Emily Gregory clinched a special election victory in a predominantly conservative district.

On Tuesday, Gregory emerged with 51.2% of the vote representing Florida’s 87th Congressional District, while her Republican rival, John Maples, garnered just 48.8%. This district, which includes former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, was once in the hands of Republican Mike Caruso.

Since Trump’s election, the Republican Party has not successfully flipped any Democratic-held seats.

Caruso, who left his position in August to take on the role of Palm Beach County’s circuit court clerk and auditor, won the district in 2024 by a staggering 19-point margin. Trump himself had a comfortable 11-point lead here during the 2024 presidential race.

Gregory’s success isn’t a standalone incident. Following Trump’s 2024 election, Democrats have flipped numerous seats in critical elections, putting pressure on Republican incumbents in similarly conservative districts.

In 2025, the Democratic Party made significant gains, flipping 25 out of the 119 contested seats, including state Senate and House positions previously held by Republicans. Notably, they captured 13 seats in Virginia’s House of Delegates, adding five in New Jersey, and achieving a supermajority in Mississippi.

Additionally, the Democrats turned over nine more seats in local races across states like Iowa, Pennsylvania, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, New Hampshire, and Arkansas.

With Gregory’s recent victory, Democrats have now flipped 29 seats that were once Republican strongholds.

In stark contrast, since Trump assumed office in November 2024, the GOP has been unable to gain a single seat that was held by Democrats, casting a shadow over their prospects as they head towards the 2026 midterm elections.
