Democrats Resist House Resolution Condemning Anti-ICE Riots in L.A.

House Democrats Reject Anti-Riot Resolution

Close to 200 House Democrats opposed a resolution put forth by California Republicans this month, which condemned the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles.

The resolution, spearheaded by Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) along with other members of the California Republican delegation, did receive some bipartisan support; seven House Democrats were part of the 215 representatives who voted in favor of the measure.

In her statement, Kim emphasized that while peaceful protests are a constitutional right, acts of vandalism, looting, and violence are not acceptable. She stated, “Condemning violence and protecting public safety is indisputable. That’s why our community is leading a resolution supporting law and order.” She expressed concern over California’s lenient approach to crime.

Kim elaborated further, indicating that the riots escalated before the National Guard’s involvement, criticizing California’s policies which, according to her, endangered public safety.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochmann mentioned earlier this month that he had dismissed some riot-related charges, noting the protests involved thefts, property damage, and assaults on law enforcement.

Hochmann stated, “The group wanted to commit a crime. They saw the protests as a cover to advance their illegal activities and inflict damage on lawful protesters.”

However, some Democrats took issue with the resolution, arguing it was politically motivated and ignored certain realities. Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán voiced her concerns on the House floor, suggesting that military deployment only heightened tensions and anxiety.

In the same week, California Governor Gavin Newsom continued his criticisms regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and Marines in various cities.

Moreover, data from Homeland Security, reported by Breitbart News, revealed that ICE agents are facing a 500% increase in assaults while attempting to locate and apprehend individuals living illegally in the U.S.
