Democrats say Musk and Trump ‘must be stopped’ after over 800 fired from weather agency

The country's highest climate and climate watchdogs are the latest targets for layoffs within the federal government, according to Democrats speaking out against the Trump administration.

At least 880 workers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the country's National Weather Service, were fired Thursday, D-Wash Sen. Maria Cantwell said in a press release as the Trump administration works to reduce and cut federal costs.

“Dismissals put our ability to predict and respond to extreme weather events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.

D-Md. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, of the group, supported Cantwell's claim in a post on Thursday, X. “We've learned today that Trump and Musk are firing hundreds of important NOAA employees.

“Again, the reckless Trump administration is causing great harm to the American people. The reported layoffs said Van Hollen would come a few weeks after hearing a report that Elon Musk's Government Efficiency (DOGE) was “targeting” weather agencies in early February.

Daniel Swain, Climate scientists at UCLA wrote that the cut was “very uneasy” and was affected, and “it was responsible for meteorologists, computer scientists who are responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather forecast models, and engineers responsible for maintaining the country's weather instrumentation network.
