Over a dozen Democratic lawmakers have sent a letter to the Trump administration urging the protection of Iranian individuals residing in the U.S. who are unable to return to their homeland safely.
The letter states, “We are calling on the Trump administration to take immediate protective measures for Iranians in the United States who cannot safely return home.” It emphasizes that the U.S. government should not compel Iranian families to go back to Iran, especially given the risks of regime oppression and the likelihood of renewed conflict. Suggestions include suspending deportation flights and granting temporary protections, such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED).
The letter further criticizes the Trump administration for allegedly conducting military actions against Iran without proper Congressional approval, thereby placing countless civilians in precarious situations. It argues that the administration has a humanitarian obligation to ensure the safety of Iranian nationals here in the U.S.
Additionally, it suggests the need to resume the processing of immigration benefits and expedite work authorization for Iranians who cannot safely return.
On April 23, the letter was directed toward several key officials, including the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Secretary of State.
The signatories include prominent figures such as Sen. Ed Markey from Massachusetts, Rep. Yasmin Ansari from Arizona, and eight other Senators along with a number of Representatives from various states.
In recent developments, Secretary Rubio has revoked the permanent resident status of some individuals connected to the Iranian regime, including arrests related to family members of a prominent Iranian military figure.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for their response regarding this issue.
