Funeral for Rev. Jesse Jackson Turns Political

What was meant to be a respectful farewell quickly shifted into political territory.

Despite Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s plea for attendees to refrain from discussing politics during his father’s funeral, several notable Democrats took the opportunity to make pointed political remarks.

Host Sarah Gonzalez remarked, “Last weekend, they decided to hijack the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s funeral to promote their own radical ideas. Now, I know what you’re thinking—Jesse Jackson was undoubtedly political and quite radical.” She also pointed out that Jesse Jackson Jr. had warned against political discussions at the service.

“Out of respect for Pastor Jesse Jackson and his legacy, please avoid discussing politics at these homecoming services. It’s a time to share gratitude,” Jesse Jr. emphasized, adding that everyone—Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives, etc.—was welcome. He wanted people to honor Jackson’s broad impact on American life.

Gonzalez highlighted Jackson Jr.’s seemingly clear message but noted that it was largely ignored by attendees. She played a clip of former President Barack Obama speaking at the funeral.

“Every day we face new attacks on our democratic foundations,” Obama stated, expressing concern over the growing divisions among Americans.

Vice President Kamala Harris also took the stage, disregarding Jackson Jr.’s advisory. “I pretty much predicted what was going on,” she joked, seemingly continuing in the political vein.

As for President Joe Biden, his contributions were less coherent, generating chuckles from Gonzalez as she commented on the mixed feelings of nostalgia and discomfort surrounding his presidency.

However, Jesse Jackson Jr. wasn’t impressed with the speeches. He expressed frustration, saying, “I spent hours listening to three American presidents who didn’t truly know my father. He had a complex relationship with the political landscape—not due to color, but because of the demands of our message.” He insisted that Jackson’s call was for a transformative voice, not strictly partisan solutions.
