Criticism Grows Over Trump’s White House Ballroom Construction
This week has seen a wave of backlash from Democratic leaders and leftist media figures following President Donald Trump’s initiation of a new ballroom project at the White House. One MSNBC host even remarked that he’s “literally destroying the people’s home.”
Key figures like House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and former Secretaries of State Hillary and Chelsea Clinton expressed their disapproval after construction workers began demolishing portions of the East Wing earlier this week.
During an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Jean-Pierre stated, “The people’s home is basically going to be sold to the highest bidder,” suggesting corruption lies at the heart of this project.
Hillary Clinton Critiques Trump’s White House Renovations
President Trump announced on Monday the commencement of demolition work on the East Wing as part of the ballroom initiative, which is being funded privately. The project had reportedly been in the planning stages for several months.
Pictures showcasing the demolition quickly proliferated on social media, igniting criticism from a number of prominent figures.
On MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” Jeffries criticized Trump for “finding the time to tear down the east wing” in pursuit of a venue fit for adulation, as if he were a monarch.
Colbert Joins the Chorus of Detractors
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow also weighed in, declaring, “Donald Trump is literally destroying people’s homes.” Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert took to humor to address the situation on “The Late Show,” mocking companies that allegedly supported Trump’s ballroom fund.
Colbert humorously remarked that “Mr. Trump has received large sums of money from companies like Amazon, Apple, and Hard Rock International.” He added, with a bit of levity, that guests to the ballroom might even see iconic memorabilia linked to previous presidents.
“It’s going to be 90,000 square feet, which is about the size of a professional football field,” Colbert quipped, advising companies to take their contributions to the president seriously.
Other shows, including “The Daily Show,” also poked fun at the ballroom project. Host Mike Costa pointed out the contradiction in Trump’s assurances about not affecting the East Wing while demolishing it.
In an op-ed, Chelsea Clinton suggested that Trump is neglecting historic values and “destroying our traditions.” Hillary Clinton echoed these sentiments on social media, stating, “This isn’t his home. It’s your home. And he’s destroying it.”
In response to the criticisms, the White House defended the demolition, asserting that the ballroom is a privately funded addition. They described the critiques as unjustified, accusing the media of overreacting to the situation.
