Protesters Trap Federal Agents During Raid
On Friday morning in Tucson, Arizona, a significant protest erupted outside a Mexican restaurant as protesters managed to trap federal agents in a gated parking lot while the agents executed search warrants related to a large-scale immigration and tax fraud investigation.
This incident unfolded at Taco Giro, located on North Grande Avenue. As federal officers were carrying out their duties, protesters surrounded them, using bike locks to secure the exits, effectively containing the agents inside.
An ICE spokesperson confirmed that personnel from ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations and IRS Criminal Investigation were involved, executing 16 search warrants in southern Arizona as part of an ongoing probe into immigration and tax violations. Reports indicate that multiple individuals were taken into custody.
Authorities arrived at the restaurant around 9 a.m., but it had yet to open for the day. Shortly afterward, a crowd of roughly 100 to 200 protesters began to gather, chanting slogans like “Go back ICE,” some expressing their sentiments with more colorful language.
Among the demonstrators, many held signs reading “hoods required for illegal arrests,” while more confrontational protesters engaged with law enforcement, with one individual seen taunting an agent across a barricade. Tensions rose when a bottle was thrown at an ICE vehicle.
As the situation escalated, authorities resorted to using flash bangs and pepper spray, resulting in the arrest of at least two individuals amidst the confrontation. Officers managed to cut through the lock securing the gate and left the parking lot in a law enforcement vehicle, receiving cheers from the gathered crowd as they departed.
Earlier in the day, witnesses spotted staff entering a nearby house, and several images showed handcuffed men being placed into an SUV. The ICE spokesperson reiterated that this operation is part of a broader investigation into immigration and tax fraud, with further details expected to emerge soon.
