Dems Can’t Just Dismiss Springfield Issue by Saying ‘They’re Here Legally’

During Friday's broadcast of HBO's “Real Time,” MSNBC host and NBC senior business analyst Stephanie Ruhle said Democrats tend to respond to concerns about a surge in migrants in Springfield, Ohio, by saying, “They're not illegal, they're here legally.” But the U.S. has a problem assimilating immigrants, “even if they're here legally and that's the nature of America.”

The New York Times Columnist Bret Stephens said:[T]The problem we have in responding to Trump is that we listen to the lies about people eating cats in Springfield, Ohio, but don't listen to the parts of the argument that contain the important kernel of truth that mass illegal immigration has had enormous and often negative consequences, and Trump's opponents have to understand the parts of the message that resonate with tens of millions of voters.

Ruhle responded, “Democrats will be quick to say they're not illegal, they're here legally. But wait, even if they are here legally and that's the nature of America, we've had a hard time since the founding of our country with assimilation with immigrants, whether they're Irish or Italian. Instead of just saying go along with it or you'll be upset, we should use this opportunity to educate people.”
