Dems flip final congressional seat 1 month after Election Day

On Tuesday, one month after Election Day, Democratic challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent Republican Rep. John Duarte in California's 13th Congressional District.

California's 13th District was the last Congressional election to be called, solidifying the partisan divide in the House of Representatives. Republicans currently hold 220 seats and Democrats hold 215.

With three expected vacancies, the Republican majority is expected to be even smaller at the start of the 119th Congress.

“I am honored to serve as the next representative for California's 13th Congressional District,” said Gray. said In Tuesday's X Post. “The final results confirm that this district is ready for independent and responsible leadership that will always put Valley residents above partisan politics.”

“But the work has just begun,” Gray continued. “In Washington, we will work every day to provide the resources the Valley needs: clean water, better educational opportunities, stronger infrastructure, and better-paying jobs. And to achieve these goals. Look to me to build bipartisan relationships.”

Democrats also flipped California's 45th Congressional District, with Democratic challenger Derek Tran defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Michelle Steele, chipping away at the already slim Republican majority in the House.

With three expected vacancies, the Republican majority is expected to be even smaller at the start of the 119th Congress.

Former Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz resigned in November while running for attorney general, but later withdrew. Florida Republican Rep. Mike Walz also plans to resign on Inauguration Day, January 20, after being named National Security Advisor in the incoming administration by President-elect Donald Trump. Elise Stefanik, a Republican congresswoman from New York, was also hired by President Trump to be ambassador to the United Nations, but she has not yet announced when she will step down.

Two of Florida's seats will be filled in special elections on April 1st.

If all three seats become vacant at the same time, Republicans would retain a majority of 217 seats, while Democrats would hold 215 seats. Under these circumstances, Republicans would only lose one vote from their party.
