Senate Reactions to Obamacare Subsidy Issues
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), who is also a physician, stated on Wednesday that the Democratic leadership’s reluctance to tackle the substantial waste, fraud, and abuse linked to Obamacare subsidies is an “insult” to American taxpayers.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Barrasso responded to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) claim that the health care plan proposed by Senate Republicans—often referred to as the Crapo-Cassidy plan—is “insulting.”
Barrasso argued that the true insult lies in the fact that “the minority leader and the Democratic Party want to transfer $83 billion of taxpayer money straight from the U.S. Treasury to insurance companies benefiting from Obamacare. That’s an affront to the American people.”
He went on to say, “This program is plagued with fraud. What they want—these coronavirus bonus programs initiated by Joe Biden—is simply three more years of direct payments to insurance companies with no oversight.”
According to Barrasso, the enhanced Obamacare subsidy has been found to involve significant waste and fraud, with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reporting concerning levels of fraud connected to these subsidies.
The Wyoming Republican pointed out that a recent bill aims to implement stricter anti-fraud measures to “make it harder to exploit the system.”
Barrasso continued, mentioning that Republicans have reinstated income verification: “Democrats, however, say, ‘No, we don’t want to check income. Let’s send these subsidies to billionaires.’ I hear the senator from New Hampshire—or wait, Vermont—talking about tax cuts for the wealthy. They want to subsidize health care for millionaires and billionaires. We’re now requiring income verification when people re-enroll. If someone underreports their income for a higher subsidy, they’ll have to repay the full amount because that constitutes fraud. They opposed these fraud protection measures and seem intent on escalating fraud over the coming years.”
“This has to stop. Americans deserve access to the care they need from their chosen doctors at a price they can manage. Obamacare has utterly failed to deliver that. Republicans are dedicated to safeguarding taxpayers. We aim to eliminate the waste, fraud, abuse, and corruption that’s intertwined with Obamacare.”
In closing, Barrasso asserted, “So when the Minority Leader criticizes Republican proposals as ‘insulting,’ I retort that the burdens Democrats place on the American people are truly insulting. The ongoing waste, fraud, and abuse is an ongoing offense to American taxpayers.”
