Denali still not Mount McKinley on Google Maps after Trump order

Google has not moved to this mountain.

President Trump ordered the renaming of Denali and the Gulf of Mexico by executive order during his first hours of office.

The search giant converted the waters into the US Gulf earlier this week.

But as of Saturday, Google Maps and its search engines still pointed users towards Denali when searching for Mount McKinley in Alaska, the highest point in the US.

The order directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish a new name within 30 days and update the Federal Geographic Name Information System (GNIS).

This system is a database managed by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

“When the Geographic Name Information System (GNIS) is updated, it will be updated,” a Google spokesperson said.

GNIS Rep confirmed that the name change was “not yet complete,” but expected it to happen within the executive order for “the period given.”

The Alaska mountain was named after William McKinley in 1896, before he became president.

McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

The name stood for more than a century before former President Obama ordered change in 2015 after pressure from the local indigenous peoples.
