Denmark Protests US Actions In Greenland
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, Denmark’s government called in the American ambassador in Copenhagen, Mark Straw, to express concerns over the actions of three allies of President Trump in Greenland.
“Foreign actors continue to show interest in their positions in Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark,” the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
The names of the three Americans involved were not disclosed by the public broadcaster DR, which first reported the story. It’s suggested they attempted to undermine Greenland’s territorial integrity and its connections to Denmark.
Trump had previously expressed interest in annexing Greenland, while some administration officials have detailed plans for the island to gain independence and form a compact with the US, allowing Washington to take part in specific areas like defense.
The US embassies in Copenhagen and the White House haven’t provided immediate comments regarding the matter. The US Consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, has deferred inquiries to Washington.
Danish leaders have frustrated Trump by refusing to relinquish Greenland and its population of about 57,000.
In 2019, the president canceled a visit to Denmark after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was reportedly “troubled” by his blunt proposal regarding Greenland.
Reports indicate that the US intelligence agency was directed in early May to investigate Greenland’s independence movement and the sentiment towards increased American involvement.
National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard has committed to identifying the source of the leak related to this report.
Vice President JD Vance traveled to Greenland in March, criticizing Danish leaders for inadequate investment in the local economy and claiming that American ownership would benefit the residents.
“The message to Denmark is very simple: we’re not doing a good job for the people of Greenland,” Vance remarked. “You’re not invested in the people of Greenland, and you’ve lost investment in this incredibly beautiful land filled with amazing people.”
