Christmas Comes Early in Aalborg
Despite it being summer, the festive spirit is already filling the air in Aalborg, Denmark. While many parts of Europe are grappling with intense heat, this Danish city is all decked out for Christmas.
Recently, the annual World Santa Claus Congress took place, bringing together hundreds of Santa Clauses, Mrs. Clauses, and Christmas elves from across the globe. Even though this event occurs months before Christmas, spectators were treated to a colorful display of holiday cheer. The streets transformed into a lively parade of red suits and white beards as professional Santas posed for pictures and engaged in various games and competitions.
This year’s event comes during a scorching summer in central and southern Europe, which makes the sight of dressed-up Santas all the more remarkable. The World Santa Claus Congress first started back in 1957 at an amusement park near Copenhagen. It made its way to Aalborg two years ago and is set to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year.
Initially intended for children, this convention has evolved into a beloved gathering for actors playing Santa and his festive companions, who spread holiday joy in stores and events worldwide. Participants traveled from places like Norway and Japan to share stories, compare beards, and prepare for the busy Christmas season ahead.
As the schedule was packed with fun activities like a gingerbread eating contest, gift-wrapping challenges, balloon modeling, and parades under the summer sun, one organizer, Peter Gislund, who also plays Santa during the holiday season, noted that not everyone is enthusiastic yet. “Grandmas say, ‘Oh, it’s too early to be here,’” he remarked. Yet, when children see Santa, their joy is palpable. “The kids say, ‘Hooray! Santa’s already here,’” he added, reflecting a sentiment that’s hard to ignore.
