Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Friday evening and later arrested, according to the Danish Prime Minister’s office.
“The prime minister is shocked by this incident,” Downing Street said, adding that the prime minister was in a square in central Copenhagen when he was attacked.
Police confirmed this on Friday. Social Platform X Police said they had arrested a man and were investigating the incident, without commenting further on the situation.
The attack on Frederiksen came just two days before Danes were due to go to the polls in the EU elections.
Several European politicians condemned the incident.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala also said he was “shocked” by the attack and that “the violence There is no place in politics And it shouldn’t be normalized!”
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he was “appalled” by the incident.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times on May 15. He has since recovered from the attack. In his first public comments since the attack, he said he “felt no hatred” towards the person who shot him.
